Visit the Donkey Sanctuary of Canada

Tucked away in the peaceful countryside of Puslinch, approximately a 35 minute drive from Milton, you’ll find a special place dedicated to the care and recovery of some of the gentlest animals around—donkeys, mules, and hinnies. This is The Donkey Sanctuary of Canada. This registered charity in a beautiful farm-like setting  goes beyond just rescuing animals; it aims to change their lives and enrich the lives of everyone who visits.

A Peaceful and Scenic Escape

Spread across a stunning 200-acre property, the sanctuary offers a perfect escape from everyday life, and the hustle of the city. With lush pastures, peaceful walking trails, and charming barns, it’s a beautiful setting for both these gentle animals and their human visitors. Over 100 donkeys and mules roam freely, enjoying the open spaces and special care and attention from the dedicated volunteers and staff.

A Sanctuary with a Mission

The Donkey Sanctuary isn’t just a shelter for donkeys; it’s a place of healing. As a registered charity, its main goal is to rescue and care for donkeys, mules, and hinnies that have suffered from neglect, abuse, or abandonment. The sanctuary gives these animals a fresh start, providing the love, care, and rehabilitation they need.

Open Days or a Private Tour of the Sanctuary

The sanctuary is open to visitors during specific times of the year, providing a unique chance to connect with nature and make a meaningful impact on the lives of animals in need.

From May to October, sanctuary opens its gates most Sundays for "Open Days", where visitors can immerse themselves in the tranquil surroundings, meet the donkeys, and learn about their care and personalities. It's a perfect location for a quiet solo visit, a fun outdoor date, or a trip for the kids.

Due to limited capacity, tickets are required, but an Annual Pass offers unlimited access throughout the year, allowing for multiple visits. Additionally, guided tours are available on Mondays and Fridays, offering a deeper exploration of the sanctuary with insights from knowledgeable staff about the donkeys' lives and the sanctuary's mission.

A Learning Experience

Visiting the sanctuary is not just a peaceful retreat; it’s an opportunity to learn about these amazing animals. Guided tours offer insights into the lives of the donkeys, their unique behaviours, and the struggles they face. Educational programs and workshops make it a perfect outing for families, school groups, and animal lovers of all ages. Be sure to stop by the gift shop to pick up a souvenir to remember your visit, or check out the Long Ears Boutique online to purchase a gift and support the sanctuary, and fund the ongoing care of these sweet, gentle animals.

A trip to sanctuary is more than just a day out; it’s a journey into a compassionate world where every animal's story is a testament to resilience and hope.
